Apple Stores will be having Apple Camp in July with registration open now. Kids ages 8-12 will have the opportunity to learn how to work in iPhoto, Keynote, Garage Band, and iMovie making their very own song, movie, presentation, and slideshow. Campers can register for 2 workshops that are 3 hours long July 14-17 and July 21-24 from 9am -12pm. Campers do not need to bring a laptop or camera with them but if they have something in particular they would like to work on they can bring it along. They receive a t-shirt and CD of what they created plus the promise of “more fun giveaways.”

Space is on a first come first serve basis and are geared for all skill levels and is recommended for ages 8-12 but does note that kids over 13 don’t need to have a parent accompany them. The best part is….. it’s FREE, so all you Mac Mommas out there sign those kiddies up! It leaves adults everywhere are saying, “I want to go to Apple Camp” who knew that all the cool kids would be going to computer camp?

NOTE: In checking online, it looks like a lot of the camps are full, Bridgeport and Washington Square have a few spots left on the waiting list and Pioneer seems to have more space open so register quickly!

On the Apple website listed under Seminars, Training & Events a specialized seminar was just announced. The seminar will be geared towards new Mac users giving what they are titling “Super Slow Intro to Macs”. If you have been to a few of the seminars or maybe even had the one to one training Apple offers and it still just seems a little too fast paced this might be the class for you.

They will be covering Mac OS X, Finder, Dock, Menus, Windows, System Preferences, Help. This is a great place to learn the ins and outs of your new machine, or if you are considering switching and are nervous about the difference in layout, this would be a great place to get familiar with the layout before you make a big decision.

The seminar will be April 10, 2008 from 12pm-1pm at MacPac on Whitaker.

Local rumors circulate that a number of Oregon schools will be switching over to the Macside.  In the early 90’s Apple was known for donations to schools as a way to promote their product and grow a future of Mac-users.  However now in the late 2000’s schools are choosing to make the switch as a way to provide higher technology to their students, making their students high competitors in a growing Mac market.  And Apple is providing them with the financial discounts to make it possible.  The following schools are said to be making the switch by Fall of 2008, George Fox University, Forest Grove School District, Jesuit High School, and Aloha School District.

Apple Store

The rumor mills are turning and the information leaking out this time is that Portland will soon be home to one more Apple store. The new Apple store is said to be located on NW 23rd in the old bridal shop building. The building will be receiving a much needed face-lift and will be home to the biggest Apple store in Oregon.

The trendy shopping area currently has no “technical retailers” and was against the proposed Apple store at first. However with the growing Apple trend and prospect of bringing even more foot traffic to the strip, the neighborhood association couldn’t resist. The store will most likely carry the same products as the other Apple stores in Portland but will offer a larger place to play and for many, a more convenient location.  The new store is said to be opening Fall 2008.
